Reconstructive breast surgery may be performed for developmental abnormalities, breast cancer removal, infection, trauma, or other causes. Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty is a common reconstructive breast procedure performed by Dr. Pownell. In some patients, the breast can develop and enlarge to such a degree that chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain occurs. Chronic irritation and pain can be reduced with a reduction mammaplasty. This procedure involves repositioning the nipple and areola, removing excess skin, and reducing the breast tissue. Incisions must be placed on the breast and the incision may differ based on the size and shape of the breast. At times, a mastopexy, or breast lift, may also be considered reconstructive if chronic irritation does not respond to medical management.
Reconstructive breast surgery after breast cancer remains a challenging area in Plastic Surgery. Many different techniques exist to reconstruct the breast including breast implant only, implant with muscle flaps, and tissue transfers. The plan for reconstruction will be very individualized and vary depending on patient desires, tumor types, surgery needs, postoperative plans, and breast shape. Contralateral breast symmetry procedures are also covered as reconstructive. Breast cancer will affect about one in every ten women in the United States. Techniques for early detection have improved survival and we continue to strive for improvement in this disease that affects us all.
