Cosmetic procedures which involve changing the shape of the body may include liposuction or surgical excision of the excess fatty tissue and skin. Liposuction involves the surgical removal of fatty tissue via small incisions and aspiration of the adipose tissue. With liposuction alone, no skin is excised. To a certain degree, the skin will contract and shrink to conform to the removed fatty tissue. Liposuction usually has the advantage of limited incisions and a quick recovery. Liposuction can be done in virtually all areas of the body including face, neck, trunk, arms, and legs.
Abdominoplasty is a common cosmetic body procedure that involves surgical excision of the excess skin of the abdominal area. A Mini abdominoplasty involves removal of skin only in the area below the umbilicus. A Full abdominoplasty allows for elevation of the entire abdominal skin and removal of virtually all of the skin and fatty tissue from the umbilicus and the pubic region. An incision around the umbilicus is also required. A Body lift incorporates a Full abdominoplasty and excision of the skin of the hips and upper buttocks. When the abdominal muscles are weakened and separated, tightening of the muscles can also be done. Liposuction of other areas is commonly performed with an abdominoplasty. Surgical excision can also be done in other areas of the body including the arms, legs, back, and neck areas.
