Restylane
The search for the most effective soft tissue filler continues. For some time, we have had other fillers, such as collagen, but each has had its own limitations such a resorbtion and\or allergic reactions. Most recently, Restylane, has been released and approved by the FDA. This agent is made of a biodegradable non-animal hyaluronic acid and has a much lower allergy rate and resorbs less than the equivalent collagen product. We have been using this product since its recent release and have found it to be all that we have expected it to be. We have used this primarily in the lips, forehead area, nasolabial folds, irregular scars and lines around the lip. It seems to last longer, look better, and be easier to use than collagen. Botox remains a very effective non-surgical means to soften many of your facial lines and wrinkles. Botox is an agent that temporarily inhibits the transmission of a nerve impulse to the directed muscle. We have found Botox to be very effective in the treatment of wrinkles of the forehead and around the eyes. We have also used Botox in the neck, around the lips, and in other areas. Botox usually lasts between three and four months. On return visit, we usually see that the muscles have not returned to their original state. You have probably also seen articles concerning its role in reduction of migraine headaches. We have certainly seen this to be true in some patients after injection for cosmetic reasons, although, specific treatments of migraines with Botox are referred to your internist or neurologist. In 2003, he was named one of “Dallas’ Best Physicians” in a survey by D Magazine. This selection is done by doctors in the community and is one of Dr. Pownell’s highest and most humbling honors. Also in 2003, he was named to “Best Doctors in America”. This listing is regularly evaluated and represents only about 4% of all physicians in America. In 2004, Dr. Pownell was recognized state-wide by his inclusion in Texas Monthly’s “Texas Super Doctors”. Again, this selection process involved nomination by his own peers throughout Texas and represents only about 3% of Texas physicians.
